On May 9, 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph the South Florida Soul Rodeo at Harris Field Park in Homestead, an event that brought together culture, community, and cowboy tradition in a way that felt both electric and deeply rooted in heritage.
Hosted at the historic rodeo grounds, the Soul Rodeo was more than just an event, it was a celebration of Black cowboy culture, Southern traditions, and the timeless spirit of rodeo life. The event ran from 5 PM to 10 PM and featured thrilling bull riding, horseback performances, live music, and a crowd full of energy and style.
From behind the lens, every moment told a story.
The dust flying beneath galloping horses, the determination in the riders’ faces, and the pride in the crowd created a visual experience unlike any other. What stood out most was the authenticity, cowboys and cowgirls dressed in bold Western fashion, families gathered together, and a shared appreciation for tradition that transcended generations.
Photographing this event was about more than action shots. It was about documenting legacy.
Black rodeo culture has long been an essential part of American history, often overlooked but rich with influence, resilience, and excellence. Events like Soul Rodeo help preserve that history while creating space for new generations to connect with it.
Some of my favorite captures from the evening were the candid moments, the laughter between riders, children watching in awe from the fences, and the quiet preparation before the next ride. Those unscripted moments often carry the most emotion.
As a photographer, I’m always drawn to spaces where culture and storytelling collide, and the South Florida Soul Rodeo delivered exactly that. It was raw, vibrant, and unforgettable.
I’m grateful to have been there to document it.
This gallery is a tribute to the riders, the families, the organizers, and the spirit of the rodeo itself.
Until the next ride.
